In 2005, I tackled an inmate who was assaulting a staff member at work. I dislocated my right shoulder and ended up needing two reconstructive surgeries. The first was a capsular shift and rotator repair surgery and the second was a partial shoulder replacements.
By 2011, I was broken physically and mentally. I had been injured in 2005 and was left with chronic pain and PTSD. I was depressed, anxious, and in chronic pain all the time. I was told by multiple orthopedic surgeons and physical therapist that I would have this chronic pain for the rest of my life. I was then referred to a pain management doctor who wanted to mask everything with pills. I was in search of someone that had the answer I wanted to hear. I wanted feel alive, pain free, and most importantly get back to all the physical activities I love (basketball, fishing, surfing, lifting…).
In January of 2012, I got a lead and made an appointment with Dr. Kelly Starrett who owns, operates and runs his P.T. Practice out of SFCF. I will never forget that day, as I was walking out of his gym a couple hours after that appointment. I got inside my car and started crying. I cried a lot on that 3 1/2 hour drive home, 6 years of searching and getting shut down and I finally found someone who had a plan and believed in me and that plan.
6 months into that plan my chronic pain had decreased significantly and I was consistently going up to sfcf 2-3 times a month to hang out, observe, and get coached which eventually turned into shadowing his coaches. I was also watching and learning from Dr. Kelly Starrett’s you tube videos “Mobility WOD”, an online self help video library and reading all of his books “Becoming a Supple Leopard”, “Deskbound”, and “Ready to Run”.
In 2014, Kelly said I should open my own CrossFit gym. I immediately called my wife and told her we were opening a gym. I knew what vision my gym would have. San Francisco CrossFit gave me my life back. No more chronic pain, no more depression, no more anxiety. I wanted to open a place where people could come in broken physically or mentally and they would have the tools and environment for them to rebuild themselves and be successful . At CrossFit Ergo we make athletes more efficient through movement and mobility, increasing performance, efficiency and preventing injury. We change the way people move.
